SaskTel’s Saskatchewan! Connected Network to Discontinue Oct. 15

SaskTel has announced it will discontinue its wireless Internet service Saskatchewan! Connected network on October 15, 2013, due to its outdated technology and “extremely low usage” in some areas. The service is available downtown and in select business districts of Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw and Prince Albert.

SaskTel says it is currently looking into implementing a new leading-edge Wi-Fi service for its customers in busy locations throughout the province, similar to existing services available at deployed in Mosaic Stadium and Victoria Park in Regina. Most existing Saskatchewan! Connected locations have low usage and will not be part of these new Wi-Fi plans.

Most telcos in Canada have free Wi-Fi networks in place for its customers and it looks like SaskTel will be introducing a newer, faster solution for its wireless customers. The crown corporation is expected to participate in Ottawa’s upcoming 700MHz wireless spectrum auction.
