Freedom Mobile Expands LTE Network in Calgary, Confirms VoLTE for iPhone Soon

Shaw has announced today its wireless network in Calgary has expanded for Freedom Mobile customers, as its Band 13 700 MHz spectrum has launched in the city. This mean LTE wireless coverage will see improvement, especially with indoor coverage.

“Freedom Mobile’s Extended Range LTE leverages Band 13 700 MHz spectrum to provide customers with farther-reaching coverage and stronger indoor wireless reception than anything we’ve been able to offer to date,” said Paul McAleese, President, Wireless, Shaw Communications, in a statement to iPhone in Canada.

Shaw acquired 700 MHz and 2500 MHz wireless spectrum licenses from Quebecor last summer, which will allow Freedom Mobile to “progressively enhance its network in Southern Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta.”

Freedom Mobile also confirms “in the coming months”, Apple devices will get VoLTE, as part of the latter’s recent staggered rollout.

With Extended Range LTE and VoLTE, Shaw says Freedom Mobile customers will get better indoor reception, expanded LTE coverage and seamless switching when moving from indoor areas without dropped calls.

“The deployment of additional spectrum is our latest step in creating an improved wireless experience that includes seamless connectivity, the latest handsets, and the high-speed LTE data plans that our customers are looking for,” added McAleese.

For Android customers, they will now get to see when someone is typing in group chats and also view read receipts, with the debut of the Rich Communication Services (RCS) protocol.
