Freedom Mobile Postpaid Connection Fee Increasing 50% on October 1

Freedom Mobile plans to increase its postpaid connection fee from $20 to $30, a 50% price hike, starting on October 1, 2020.

According to internal documents seen by iPhone in Canada, Freedom Mobile says the connection fee price increase will only apply to in-store activations and hardware upgrades on postpaid lines. For those upgrading online, the fees will be waived, as per most wireless carriers.

Freedom Mobile justifies the price increase by saying it will support the company’s ongoing work to improve its network and services, and help deliver an “even better” experience to its customers.

The connection fee does not apply to prepaid line activations, which remain at $10 when a customer tops up for the first time.

Back in June, Freedom started charging $20 for postpaid line activations and hardware upgrades.

Canada’s ‘Big 3’ wireless carriers and their flanker brands charge $40 as an activation fee. It’s unclear if Freedom Mobile will ever reach this number or remain slightly lower.

Earlier today, Freedom Mobile launched sales of the Apple Watch SE in limited quantities, and also price cut the Series 5. The company also plans to sell the Apple Watch Series 6 too, at a later date yet to be determined.
