Public Mobile has announced price increases are coming to customers on Legacy or Pioneer plans, which are those who have phone access to their call centre, and are on one of the plans below:
$22 Province-Wide Talk
$28 Canada-Wide Talk + Text
$43 Canada-Wide Talk + Text + 1GB Data
$48 Canadian & U.S. Talk + Text + 1GB Data
$63 Canadian & U.S. Talk + Text + 2GB Data
The Telus prepaid wireless carrier said in a Community posting, “As you know, Public Mobile has been on a journey to become an online-only brand and give Canadians control of their wireless spend. Along this journey, we will need to make some changes to adapt.”
This means on February 15, 2018, price increases are coming for the plans listed above, because “operating a call centre is expensive and, as the number of Legacy/Pioneer customers decreases, we lose the scale that has allowed us to operate it to date.”
Below are the new prices, which the price changes in parentheses:
$25 Province-Wide Talk (+$3)
$33 Canada-Wide Talk + Text (+$5)
$45 Canada-Wide Talk + Text + 1GB Data (+$2)
$50 Canadian & U.S. Talk + Text + 1GB Data (+$2)
$65 Canadian & U.S. Talk + Text + 2GB Data (+$2)
But wait, Public Mobile has an offer for these Legacy and Pioneer customers, if they don’t want to pay more. They can switch to sister company Koodo on a postpaid plan, and pay their same rate as before, but the offer is only available from January 10 to February 9, 2018.
The question “What is happening at Public Mobile?” was answered by the company in their FAQ, reassuring they are “here to stay”, adding “Over the past couple of years, we’ve radically changed the way we do things. As a brand that does wireless differently, Public Mobile is committed to offering an online-only wireless service that provides more choice in a clear and uncomplicated way, and will continue to do so in the years ahead.”
