Over 2.2 million seniors across Canada receive the GIS from the federal government and are eligible for the new Mobility for Good for Seniors. The program includes a free refurbished smartphone, unlimited nationwide talk and text, and 3GB of data for $25 CAD per month.

The new program is entirely subsidized by Telus and comes at no cost to the government or taxpayers. To get set up, program participants are required to provide proof of receiving the GIS benefit to receive their unique redemption code.

“Through Mobility for Good for Seniors, we are providing some of our most vulnerable Canadians with access to the vital tools and resources they need to stay safely and meaningfully connected, and in time for the holiday season,” said Telus President and CEO Darren Entwistle, in an emailed statement to iPhone in Canada.

Telus says “this program is launching at a critical time as seniors’ ability to stay connected to loved ones and access important health service resources has been limited throughout the pandemic,” referencing how seniors have always reported the “highest levels of loneliness compared to any other demographic.”
