Review: Edit Excel sheets with Mariner Calc!

Hey all!

Today we have an application review called “Mariner Calc” and it is an Excel spreadsheet for your iPhone that allows you to both view and edit (yes, edit) native Microsoft Excel files!

Mariner Calc by Mariner Software Inc

As I mentioned above, Mariner Calc is essentially the Excel spreadsheet program but for your iPhone and you may both view and edit native Microsoft Excel files from .xls Excel ’97 and later. So let’s get into it.

The first thing I thought when I was about to start up this app was “this is going to be difficult to use”. Well, as chance would have it, I was dead wrong. As soon as you start this app, you are presented with an easy to use and friendly tutorial. Obviously the tutorial will not be needed by everyone, but it is definitely a great way to start this type of productivity application.

As you go on and finish the tutorial, you are presented with a very familiar Microsoft Excel type of feel. If you have ever used Excel on a PC or Mac, you’ll be right at home here. Moreover, as you use the app, you may have views in both landscape and portrait, the former which makes typing a breeze.

So, after some digging, I uncovered some pretty neat features. You get wireless transfer support which means you can transfer files wirelessly to and from your computer, you can split or freeze panes, you can change borders, you have access to multiple sheets at the same time, you may change the fonts, colors, and alignments and the app fully supports cut, copy, paste, undo, and redo. Now many of you are already familiar with this with the new iPhone 3.0 software, but those still running 2.2.1 or earlier, you get this cut/copy/paste functionality but only within the boundaries of the application itself. However, it is still just as easy to use cut/copy/paste as the way Apple presents it in iPhone OS 3.0. The last VERY cool feature is you get OVER 145 functions! Check out below for the breakdown of just some of the functions:

Math functions (24)
ABS, CEILING, COMBIN, CONVERT, EVEN, EXP, FACT, FLOOR, INT, LN, LOG, LOG10, MOD, ODD, POWER, PRODUCT, RAND, ROUND, ROUNDDOWN, ROUNDUP, SIGN, SQRT, SUM, SUMIF, TRUNC

As you can see, this application is very extensive and strives to push the boundaries of productivity apps for the iPhone. I am extremely excited to continue to use Mariner Calc and I highly recommend it for any business student or business minded individuals that use Excel on a day-to-day basis.

You can pick up Mariner Calc in the iTunes App Store for $9.99, which blew my mind because similar apps on Blackberries for example run you about $20.00.

With that being said, I am giving away one (1) free promo code of Mariner Calc to one very excel savvy individual. Don’t worry, it won’t be TOO hard!

To the person that wants this wicked application, you must answer the following question:

1.) In Excel, how does it look when you type the function AVERAGE in a cell for numbers 1 and 3 and 8?

For example, the function SUM for numbers 1 and 2 and 3 would look like this: =SUM(1+2+3) which will give me the SUM number of 1,2 and 3.

First person to POST the answer BELOW wins!

Enjoy!
