Google Meet to Limit Meeting Length to 60 Minutes on Free Plans September 30th

After five months of offering Google Meet users premium-tiered perks on the free plan, Google will be restricting Google Meet meeting length to 60 minutes for non-paying users. On September 30th, free versions of Google Meet video calls will be limited to an hour.

In a report from The Verge, Google has confimed that the restrictions will be in place by the end of the month. In April, Google gave all users with a valid Gmail account the ability to host and join Google Meet meetings with no restriction on length. With the boom of video conferencing tools like Zoom, Skype, and Microsoft Teams, Google wanted to stay competitive and offered G Suite perks as well.

Over the course of the later spring and summer seasons, Google offered add premium features such as G Suite for Education customers, and the benefit of saving meeting recordings to Google Drive. Typically, these features would onl be accessible to the Enterprise tier of G Suite. When announcing that the features would become free, Google set a cutoff of September 30th.

While corresponding to The Verge through email, a Google spokesperson said: “We don’t have anything to communicate regarding changes to the promo and advanced features expiring. If this changes, we’ll be sure to let you know.”

Earlier this year, Google Meet crossed the 100 million daily participant mark. Those numbers likely grew thanks to the ongoing promotion.
