Apple Announces NTT DOCOMO in Japan to Sell the iPad Starting June 10

Apple has announced NTT DOCOMO, Japan’s largest wireless carrier, will offer cellular versions of the iPad for sale starting on Tuesday, June 10. Apple CEO Tim Cook had this to say:

“We are extremely happy for iPad to join iPhone on NTT DOCOMO’s network,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “The results on iPhone have been tremendous, and we look forward to delivering iPad to NTT DOCOMO customers.”

The Japanese carrier will offer the iPad Air and Retina iPad mini, with pre-registration available June 2 at DOCOMO dealers and the company’s website.

Last fall the Japanese carrier inked a deal with Apple to sell the iPhone, which resulted in resounding success for the carrier after the launch, helping add 279,000 customers in one quarter, the most since December 2011.

Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported Apple’s smartphone marketshare in Japan was at 36.6%, up 11.1% compared to a year ago.

In Canada, Rogers, Telus and Bell also offer the iPad Air and Retina iPad mini as well.
