Microsoft is increasing its OneDrive cloud file size upload limit effectively allowing users to upload larger video files, 3D models, and more. The OneDrive file size limit was previously capped at 100GB. Microsoft will effectively be enabling file sizes more than double that to be uploaded as the new size limit is set to 250GB.
Announced earlier this week, Microsoft has been listening to community feedback and acknowledges that work-from-home conditions mean many users require the ability to upload and share larger files. To accommodate the work-from-home lifestyle many users have, Microsoft will be raising the file size upload limit to 250GB by the end of the month.
We are pleased to announce that we’re making it easier than ever for you to store, sync, and share large files in Microsoft 365. Our latest improvement will help increase the upload file size limit for Microsoft 365 from 100 GB to 250 GB—which includes uploads of files into SharePoint, Teams, and OneDrive. So now, you will be able to easily share large files like a 3D model of a new building, a client commercial shot in 8K video, a large dataset for a vaccine trial or research projects or large videos for educational projects.
The new limit is not only for those using OneDrive for business or for school. Any user can take advantage of the new limit. Moving forward, users can share 4K or even 8K video files amongst their teams and clients. Zip files containing a large number of high-quality photos can also be shared with clients or even family members. The use cases of large file sizes can go on and on.
According to Microsoft, the increase in limit has been made by splitting each file into chunks and encrypting it with a unique key. Microsoft states that all files are backed up to Azure Storage to ensure availability and performance reach the high mark. Users can easily upload and download files from OneDrive at their leisure.
Support for 250GB file sizes will be added by the end of January. Though, general availability is expected for the end of the first quarter in 2021.
