Apple Considers ProMotion Refresh Rates for Next iPhone: Digitimes

Citing industry sources, a report by DigiTimes is claiming that Apple is considering the use of iPad Pro-style 120Hz ProMotion displays in its 2020 iPhones. The report notes that as opposed to LCD panels in iPads, next year’s iPhones will sport high refresh rate OLED panels. All iPhones to date include 60Hz displays.

Apple debuted ProMotion displays in 2017 with the 10.5-inch iPad Pro and 12.9-inch iPad Pro, featuring a 2x refresh rate which dramatically improved the responsiveness and user experience with user gestures more quickly being translated into on-screen motion.

In addition to a more fluid touch experience, 120Hz allows the screen to display 24 FPS, 48 FPS, and 60 FPS video content more accurately.

The source notes that 2020 iPhones with ProMotion display will see their screens refresh at between 90Hz and 120Hz. The report further claims that 2020 iPhones will feature 5G and may also sport a smaller Face ID notch.

There are several Android phones on the market today with 90Hz screens, including the latest Google Pixel 4, whereas the Asus ROG phone is the first smartphone to features a 120Hz OLED panel.
