Apple Adds Self-Service Website for Starting Activation Lock Removal Requests
Apple has added a self-service Turn Off Activation Lock portal to its website, helping users turn off the security feature on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.
Activation Lock is a feature for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches to keep devices secure in the event they get lost or stolen. It means that even if you remotely erase your device, the thief would still be unable to reactivate it under a different Apple ID.
There are times when you want to disable Activation Lock, like if you sell or gift your device. This webpage lets you do that, and also provides a link to Apple Support to request they disable Activation Lock if you want.
According to a MacRumors report, there’s an option on the page to start an Activation Lock support request, but only in the United States. This means, with this new step, users don’t need to contact Apple Support directly. The support request means that the device can’t be in Lost Mode and cannot be managed by a third-party, like an educational institute or business.
Users will also be asked to enter your valid email and the serial number of the device. They will then be given a form to fill out which will allow them to prove the ownership of the device. Users will then have to provide the device’s purchase date, the location from which it was purchased, and the receipt of the purchase, if available. The information provided will be used by Apple or a company affiliated with Apple to complete the process and remove the Activation Lock on the device.
Once you submit the support request, the Cupertino company will review the request and update the users via email. A support case number will also be generated for reference. One thing to note here is that once Apple removes the Activation Lock on your iPhone or iPad, all of the device’s data will be erased permanently.
Unfortunately, the new portal is only available to customers in the US, and there’s not yet word on when it’s coming to Canada.
