Amazon has announced it will be expanding its Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing hub to Calgary, Alberta, set to open in late 2023 or early 2024.
AWS offers companies and developers of all sizes to run their applications from the cloud from various data centres located around the globe.
For the new AWS Canada West Region in Calgary, there will be three Availability Zones at launch to join the existing AWS Canada (Central) Region in Montreal, which also has the same number of zones.
“Our infrastructure in Canada has allowed customers to transform the way businesses, educational institutions, and government agencies serve their stakeholders. With another AWS Region in Canada, customers will see even lower latency for emerging solutions like 5G-enabled applications and machine learning at the edge, and it will strengthen their ability to architect their regional infrastructure for even greater fault tolerance, resiliency, and availability,” said Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President of Infrastructure Services at AWS, in a statement on Monday.
Alberta Premier Jason Kenney added, “I look forward to working with AWS on this project and seeing how it will strengthen Alberta’s information technology and communication sector.”
Amazon says overall, AWS is estimated to invest over $21 billion CAD in Canada by 2037, through its two infrastructure regions in Calgary and Montreal. AWS says the infrastructure investment is “expected to increase Canada’s GDP by approximately more than $39 billion CAD over the same time period.”
For the new AWS Canada West Region in Calgary alone, over $4 billion CAD will be invested by 2037, with an estimated creation of over 950 new full-time equivalent jobs in Canada.
