Apple has long been rumoured to launch augmented reality (AR) glasses and now the latest report from Digitimes (via MacRumors) claims production of these glasses are set for 2022.
According to the paywalled report:
Apple AR glasses under development
Taiwan-based optical component suppliers are engaged in the development of Apple’s augmented reality smart glasses, which may be commercialized by 2022, according to industry sources.
Back in November 2019, The Information reported Apple was reportedly set to launch an AR gaming and video headset in 2022 and AR glasses in 2023.
Bloomberg came out with its own report the next day to corroborate the report’s information, while also citing how a new 3D sensor would be debuting for the next iPad Pro, which we saw happen last week.
The 2020 iPad Pro now includes a LiDAR scanner to measure depth and “opens up tremendous possibilities for augmented reality and beyond,” explains Apple. Time will tell to see how Apple integrates this new LiDAR tech into future devices, such as glasses or headsets.
