Apple Pay to Integrate NFC Sticker Payments on Scooters, Parking Meters

Apple is reportedly planning to integrate Apple Pay and NFC in ways that would make iPhone users’ everyday activities a lot easier.

That’s according to a new report from 9to5Mac, which explains that the new type of NFC tag (which can be embedded in stickers) automatically triggers the Apple Pay Wallet interface to open when an iPhone or Apple Watch is held near it. No special point-of-sale terminals, third-party apps or additional set up is required.

Apple is reportedly partnering with apparel brand Bonobos, parking meters service PayByPhone, and Bird scooter rentals on the initial rollout.

Once it launches to the public, all you’ll have to do to pay for an e-scooter, parking meter, or some self-shopping is pull out your iPhone, tap it on the NFC sticker, and verify your purchase with Touch ID or Face ID. This will allow some companies to get rid of the big terminals required to facilitate Apple Pay transactions.

In addition to the NFC stickers, Apple also announced that Apple Pay users will be able to sign up for store loyalty cards within the Wallet app in a single tap. That could do away with the hassle of spelling out your email or phone number at retailers, for example.

Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s Vice President of Apple Pay, announced the new feature at the TRANSACT Tech conference in Las Vegas on Monday. TRANSACT is an expo focused on the latest in mobile and contactless payment technologies.

At this point, there’s currently no specific date for when these features will launch. However, it is expected to arrive sometime later this year. We’ll likely hear more about these features at WWDC next month.
