Apple Seeks Waivers From President Trump’s Tariffs on iPhone Parts, and More

According to a report by Bloomberg, Apple is requesting a waiver on President Donald Trump’s recently imposed additional tariffs on products imported from China, which apply to the Apple Watch, AirPods, iMac, iPhone parts and several other components and accessories. 

Despite the fact that Apple had mixed results on its requests for exclusions from the previous round of duties, the company is now seeking waivers from 15% import duties on 11 of its products. According to the request posted online, Apple has applied for waivers on the following products:

• HomePod
• Beats Pill+ Wireless Speaker
• AirPods
• Beats Wireless Earbuds
• iPhone Smart Battery Case
• Charging Case for AirPods
• Charging case for PowerBeats
• Storage Components for Mac Pro
• Batteries for iPhone
• Batteries for MacBook
• Apple Watch

Earlier this week, Tim Cook revealed that Apple is already paying tariffs on some products.

In its requests for tariff waivers, the Cupertino, California-based company said it hasn’t identified a source outside of China that is able to meet U.S. demand for the products or components in the coming year.

Exclusion decisions are based on whether a product is available only from China, is strategically important or related to Chinese industrial programs, and whether duties will “cause severe economic harm” to the company or U.S. interests.

Last year, Apple’s request for relief from 25% duties on components for the Mac Pro was approved for 10 parts for the product, while 5 parts were denied exclusions from the tariffs.
