Apple, Netflix, and Disney All Big Winners at 2021 SAG Awards

Streaming services won big at this year’s SAG Awards, with Netflix, Apple, and Disney all taking home major awards across the board.

A new report from Engadget notes that Netflix “translated its 30 nominations to major wins across the board,” with titles like Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom taking home male actor (the late Chadwick Boseman) and lead female actor (Viola Davis). The overall movie cast award went to The Trial of the Chicago 7, while The Crown received two wins and both Ozark and The Queen’s Gambit came home with one win.

Apple, for its part, took home a male comedy actor award for Jason Sudekis’ performance in the Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso. Disney, on the other hand, garnered the stunt ensemble award for a comedy or drama series for The Mandalorian,

The report notes that more conventional releases like Minari and Schitt’s Creek were in the minority, but it’s not surprising given the global shift in entertainment due to the pandemic.

Even so, the outcomes weren’t entirely shocking as many of these productions won Golden Globe awards just a few short weeks ago. These SAG wins do, however, give streaming services a bit more prestige, and it could be a hint at what to expect at the Oscars at the end of the month.
