Tonight from 10PM – 12AM PST, Apple will be applying scheduled maintenance for its me.com service, MobileMe. During the maintenance, web apps on me.com will not be accessible, but MobileMe Mail that users have pushing to their devices will be unaffected.
Upon completion of the maintenance, reports have indicated that Apple will be revealing numerous enhancements to the web-based service. The first major enhancement will be in the form of a redesigned Mail interface, which itself has been in beta for the past month. The Mail update is also expected to bring web-based push functionality to provide real-time updating as emails arrive.
Also on the enhancement schedule is a resigned MobileMe toolbar. The current toolbar used to access the MobileMe web-apps, pictured below, will be replaced by a single “application switcher” icon that will allow users to switch between web apps.
The last enhancement is the release of a dedicated “Find My iPhone” application, while still keeping the web-based application active. The application, which is universal across the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, will be available in the App Store as a free download.
The Find My iPhone app, which provides quicker access to the Find My iPhone functions, will allow users to track their device(s) using GPS, send remote messages to the device(s), and remotely lock or wipe their device(s). In other words, the same functions that the web-based Find My iPhone has will be available in the app.
MobileMe is available from Apple for $109 per year. Users can also receive a $30 discount, paying $79, if MobileMe is purchased with a Mac, iPhone, or iPad at an Apple Store.
