Apple Unveils The Stunning iPhone 5 With 4″ Display, 4G LTE, A6 Processor & Much More [FULL DETAILS]
As predicted, Apple has unveiled its latest and greatest smartphone yet, the iPhone 5, at today’s ‘It’s Almost Here‘ media event held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. As speculated, the iPhone 5 sports a completely redesigned thinner chassis with a taller 4″ display, 4G LTE, a faster A6 processor, an improved 8-Megapixel iSight camera with Panorama mode, a 720p FaceTime HD camera, more powerful battery, improved microphones / speaker system and a brand new Lightning dock connector. Like Phil Shiller said: “this is unlike anything we or anyone else in our industry has made before.”
Design & Display:
Apple says that “iPhone 5 is the thinnest phone we’ve ever made, and also the lightest”. It is made entirely of glass and aluminum and is the thinnest smartphone in the world. It has a 4-inch 326ppi Retina display with 1136 x 640 resolution. Same width as before, but taller 16:9 aspect ratio with 44% better color saturation. It will come in same black and white iterations with 16Gb, 32GB and 64GB capacities.
Apple has added a worldwide 4G LTE antenna to the iPhone 5 that also supports HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA around the globe. According to Apple, it has a single chip for voice and data, and a single radio chip as well. Here are the LTE supported carriers in North America:
- In US: Sprint, AT&T and Verizion
- In Canada:Rogers, Telus, Bell, Fid and Virgin
The iPhone 5 also packs a dual-channel 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi with speeds up to 150Mbps.
The iPhone 5 packs the brand new A6 processor which according to Apple is a 2X faster CPU with 2x graphics than previous version. As Phil said: “We’ve updated every aspect of iPhone 5. Everything has been enhanced.”
iSight And FaceTime HD Cameras:
iPhone 5 has an improved 8-megapixels iSight camera with a 5-element lens and f/2.4 aperture. It’s the same as the iPhone 4S camera but thinner. There’s also a new dynamic low light mode which evaluates nearby pixels to give up to 2 f-stops greater low-light performance. According to Apple, it is also 40% faster on photo capture. While the video is still 1080p, it supports better video stabilization with facial recognition. You can even grab still photos too in video mode.
The front-facing FaceTime camera is now 720p, backside illuminated. It also supports face detection and allows FaceTime over cellular.
Apple has introduced an amazing new feature in the iPhone 5 called ‘panorama’. You sweep the scene vertically to get the most resolution, then just swing your phone. The result is a 28 megapixel image. Best thing is, even if you weave or shake a bit it’ll smooth things out and remove any crazy artifacts automatically.
Powerful Battery & Improved Microphone / Audio Systems:
The sixth generation iPhone’s battery supports 8 hours of 3G or LTE talk time or browsing while 10 hours on WiFi. Even the audio system has been enhanced with three microphones. Front, bottom, and back. This is for voice recognition and noise cancelation. There is also an improved speaker design with a 5-magnet transducer.
Lightning Dock Connector:
As expected, the iPhone 5 sports the all new ‘Lightning’ dock connector. It has an all digital, 8-signal design with an adaptive interface and improved durability. It is also reversible, means you can plug it either way and is 80% smaller than the older connector. Apple said: “it’s a huge difference in the world’s thinnest smartphone.”
Pricing, Pre-Orders & Availability:
The iPhone 5 will be available in 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299, and 64GB for $399 on September 21st with pre-orders starting on Friday, 14th in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.
These Prices are based on a two year contract in the US. We are yet to hear about upgrade pricing from our ‘Big 3′ carriers. We’ll update you with that pretty soon. Stay tuned!
