Google has just made its Nik Collection photo editing software ($149) available completely free to download, something both amateur and professional photographers can take advantage of. The collection includes seven different desktop services namely Analog Efex Pro, Color Efex Pro, Silver Efex Pro, Viveza, HDR Efex Pro, Sharpener Pro and Dfine, and is compatible with Mac and Windows computers (via TechCrunch).

“The Nik Collection is comprised of seven desktop plug-ins that provide a powerful range of photo editing capabilities — from filter applications that improve color correction, to retouching and creative effects, to image sharpening that brings out all the hidden details, to the ability to make adjustments to the color and tonality of images”.

Even though free software is always welcome, it is being speculated that it may be a sign that these services will be discontinued soon. Google killed off Picasa recently as well, which was once the center of its online photography portals.
