Amazon has unveiled the Echo Show 5, a new smart display speaker with a 5.5-inch screen powered by Alexa, for $99.99 in Canada. This is a smaller offering versus the company’s larger 10.1-inch Echo Show at a lower price.
Echo Show 5 will allow users to see their daily schedule including weather, traffic and more. The display will allow you to ask Alexa to watch videos such as news, or Prime Video or show you the latest how-to videos by voice, with new integration with wikiHow.
“Since we launched the first Echo Show device, customers have told us that they love asking Alexa to show them things—whether it’s the news, their to-do list, or Prime Video. With Echo Show 5, we’ve made it even easier and affordable for customers to add a smart display to every room of their house,” said Tom Taylor, Senior Vice President, Amazon Alexa, in an issued statement. “The compact form factor is perfect for a bedside table or desk, plus it has a camera shutter for added peace of mind, and new Alexa privacy features for even more control.”
As another Alexa product, the Echo Show 5 will allow you to control your smart home, plus perform video calling with its 720p HD front-facing camera and messaging with other friends, including Skype support. There’s also an on/off switch for the camera shutter for privacy.
The device comes with an ambient lighting feature called Alexa Sunrise to help you wake up easier.
Echo Show 5 supports customized routines so you can just say “Alexa, start my day” and you’ll see and hear your daily routine, which could include the news, weather and more.
According to Amazon Canada, there’s a new privacy feature allowing users to delete what they’ve said for the day, by saying, “Alexa, delete everything I said today”. An upcoming feature will also allow users to say “Alexa, delete what I just said,” and the most recent request will be deleted.
The launch of the Echo Show 5 looks to compete with the Google Nest Hub, which launched earlier this week in Canada for $169.
