Fandango Acquires Rival Online Ticketing Service MovieTickets.com

Fandango announced that it has signed a deal to acquire online rival MovieTickets.com for an undisclosed amount, adding to its dominance in the U.S. market and getting access to more film fans overseas.

The move continues the expansion of Fandango, which last year acquired movie-review aggregator RottenTomatoes.com and film-buff site Flixster from Warner Bros. The deal, which was all about global expansion, will help the company service “hundreds of millions of moviegoers worldwide.”

In a statement, Fandango President Paul Yanover said:

“MovieTickets.com has done a terrific job, building a popular and trusted brand with millions of loyal customers and hundreds of exhibitors, and has been a champion of serving theater circuits large and small for nearly two decades. We look forward to sharing an array of mobile and social media innovations with their customer base to enhance the movie discovery, planning and ticket buying experience.”

The deal between Fandango and MovieTickets.com is scheduled to close later this year. Fandango says that MovieTickets.com will continue to operate from its HQ in Florida after the acquisition completes.
