Canada to Increase Investment in Coast-to-Coast Fast Charging Network for Electric Vehicles

Canada is expanding its electric vehicle coast-to-coast fast-charging network.

The adoption rate of electric vehicles is increasing worldwide, and many countries across the globe are investing heavily in research and development. Countries such as Canada, France, India, Netherlands, and France have introduced various campaigns to boost the adoption of electric vehicles.

According to a new press release, Ottawa is investing in more infrastructure for electric vehicles throughout the country. Bill Casey, Member of Parliament for Cumberland–Colcheste, today announced a new $4.6 million CAD investment in Petro-Canada to build 92 new electric vehicle fast chargers as part of its coast-to-coast charging network.

“Our government is making historic investments in green infrastructure, helping us to move from traditional fuels to cleaner choices that will power our future while lowering costs for families,” says Casey. “With more electric vehicles on our roads, we will reduce pollution and create strong and sustainable communities.”

The first station to be completed as part of this initiative will be located in Stewiacke, Nova Scotia, and will be a part of a bigger network of more than 50 fast-charging locations, with two charging units at each location.

“Keeping Canadians moving is what we do,” says Deborah Gullaher, the Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Suncor. “We know that our customers’ needs are changing, and with more than 1,800 retail and wholesale locations across the country, we have the network in place to address some of the challenges being faced by electric vehicle drivers. By combining the elements from our top-tier national network with the fastest technology available, we will be able to meet the needs of our customers today and into the future.”



The initiative is part of Ottawa’s $182.5 million CAD investment to create a seamless, coast-to-coast charging network for electric vehicles such as Tesla models. Over 500 fast-charging stations are already finished or planned to be built this year. Hundreds more are expected over the next two years.

Through Budget 2019, another #130 million CAD is being directed towards this charging network, and Canadian citizens now have an up-to-$5000 CAD incentive to purchase or lease an electric vehicle.
