Apple’s Files App in iOS 13 Gets Built-In Document Scanner [u]

Files app ios 13 document scanner

Apple added a document scanner to its Notes app in iOS 12, and now with iOS 13, integration of the ‘Scan Documents’ feature has now been built into the Files app, too.

How to access ‘Scan Documents’ within the Files app? Just launch the Files app, tap the ‘Browse’ tab along the bottom, tap the three dots in the upper right corner, then select ‘Scan Documents’.

The camera will then launch allowing you to scan a document right away. You can edit scans to be in colour, grayscale, black and white or photo. Once you perform a scan, it will let you adjust the corners, in a very similar fashion to Readdle’s excellent Scanner Pro.

Once the scan is complete you can choose a destination in Files to save your file to. Integration of the document scanner into the Files app makes it quick and easy for those looking to digitize paper receipts and more.

Sadly, there doesn’t look to be automatic optical character recognition (OCR) applied with scans (which Scanner Pro does), as we were unable to search for our test document with an obvious keyword. Update: OCR is supported as our test document did show up in a keyword search this morning, but nothing worked yesterday. Still, the scanner works well for those looking to digitize something quickly and needing to send it somewhere, despite needing to move your iPhone farther away to scan versus Scanner Pro.

What document scanner do you use on iOS?
