Uber-Like ‘Boatsharing’ App GetMyBoat Launches in Canada

Looking to rent a boat this weekend? There’s an app for that.

Called GetMyBoat, the app is described as “a digital boat-share app that lets you book and use strangers’ boats,” reads a new report from the Vancouver Sun.

The San Francisco-based startup, first launched in 2013, is now available over in 9,300 destinations around the world, including Canada. While the large majority of boat listings are located in Toronto and Vancouver, there are boats to be rented in nearly every province. According to the report, there are currently 479 listings across the country, and the number continues to grow.

According to the report, a search of the Vancouver area brings up a number of different boat types — from pontoon boats to jet skis to 50-foot yachts, as well as smaller vessels like canoes, kayaks, and standup paddleboards.



Much like Uber and other ridesharing programs, each boat listing contains star ratings, and users can also read reviews given by previous renters. Boat rentals are usually booked in advance, but many can also be booked on-demand — many users have booked and used a boat on the same day.

While renters are usually expected to have boating experience and knowledge in piloting a vessel, GetMyBoat also offers a number of excursions that come with an experienced captain, allowing renters to just kick back and relax.

Currently, the GetMyBoat app is available for both iOS as well as Android, and users can browse the app’s nautical pickings on its website, as well. Ahoy!
