Global Mobile Awards 2012 Winners Announced, Guess Who Won The Best App Award?

The 17th Annual Global Mobile Awards were unveiled in a special ceremony at GSMA’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, where comedian and songwriter, Tim Minchin announced the winners at the industry’s biggest annual event. A record 600 entries were received this year from over 170 independent analysts, journalists, academics and subject matter experts from throughout the world.

Before you take a peep at the complete list of 2012 winners (available here), do you know who got the best mobile app award this year? It was none other than the world’s most addictive game franchise, the Angry Birds Rio!

What happens when everybody’s favorite fierce fowl get caged and shipped to Rio? They get very angry! In Angry Birds Rio, the original Angry Birds are kidnapped and taken to the magical city of Rio de Janeiro, where they eventually escape their captors and set out to save their friends Blu and Jewel – two rare macaws and the stars of the hit motion picture, Rio. Angry Birds Rio pairs the physics-based gameplay of the original game with unique twists based on the film. Meanwhile, WhatsApp took the Judges’ choice award for best overall mobile application.
