Amid growing U.S. pressure on European countries to shun the Chinese telecoms giant over espionage concerns, Huawei chairman Liang Hua has today announced that the company is willing to sign no-spy agreements with governments, including the U.K. (via Yahoo! Finance).

“We are willing to sign no-spy agreements with governments, including the UK government, to commit ourselves to making our equipment meet the no-spy, no-backdoors standard,” Huawei chairman Liang Hua told reporters in London via an interpreter.

“Despite the fact Huawei has its headquarters in China, we are actually a globally operating company,” he said. “Where we are operating globally we are committed to be compliant with the locally applicable laws and regulations in that country.

While the U.S. has told its allies not to use Huawei’s technology to build new 5G networks because of worries it could be a vehicle for Chinese spying, the company continues to deny the accusation.

While the U.K. is still deciding the extent to which it will allow Huawei to participate in building its 5G networks, a British government spokesperson has said the results of the telecoms supply chain review affecting Huawei’s case would be announced soon.

“The security and resilience of the UK’s telecoms networks is of paramount importance, and we have strict controls for how Huawei equipment is currently deployed in the UK,” the spokesperson said.
