Instagram Acknowledges Bug Which Broke iMessage Link Previews

If you’ve noticed that Instagram links have not been generating previews when sent through iMessage lately, you are not alone as Facebook has just officially acknowledged that a bug in Instagram broke link previews in iMessage, Mashable is reporting.

A growing number of users have also been complaining about the issue on Reddit, noting that when you try to send an Instagram post to someone through iMessage, it only sends an Instagram URL and users have to click through to see the post.

“This issue is due to a bug, and we are actively working to resolve Instagram link previews in iMessage so that they load normally,” said an Instagram spokesperson.

“When iMessage tries to open the link to look for the metadata, Instagram forwards the requests to the login page,” said security researcher Tommy Mysk. “Because the login page of Instagram has no metadata for link previews, iMessage doesn’t show anything.”

Although Apple has not issued any comment regarding the matter, its developer guidelines clearly note that it’s up to developers to make sure their links cooperate with iMessage.
