Previously, Instagram relied on Google Maps for its location mapping but now, it appears the social network has switched to Apple Maps (via MacRumors).
While there is no official word yet from Instagram regarding the change or why it switched to Apple Maps, some believed that since Google maps has drastically changed the pricing plan for their maps API, it is likely the move is related to Apple being the cheaper option than the better one.
Another reason for the switch could be Apple Maps’ support for dark mode which is not yet available with Google Maps.
Whatever the reason, most Instagram users will, however, not appreciate the change since Apple Maps is still struggling with accuracy and reliability in most parts of the world.
