iPhone 7 Camera Review By DxOMark: “Solid Evolution” Over iPhone 6s

DxOMark has released their camera review for the iPhone 7, earning the latter a score of 86, just one point behind the Samsung Galaxy S6 and two points behind the Galaxy S7. The iPhone 7 Plus review is coming shortly, as the site says they need additional time for testing, given the model’s additional features.

When shooting outdoors in bright daylight, DxOMark said the iPhone 7 camera had “excellent exposures and dynamic range.” The site also noted “we observed good sharpness uniformity across the field of view–both in our objective measurements and in natural images.”

There was “good detail preservation in outdoor conditions,” but also “slight luminance noise is noticeable.” White balance was “good” but “in some cases, a barely noticeable green cast can appear.”

As for indoor images in extreme low light, those shot with 5 Lux “are very usable, with bright exposure and nice color; and although luminance noise is visible, some details are preserved.”

The flash was shown to have “great colour” but also suffer from “dark corners”. The now use of wide colour gamut is noticeable in displays capable of showing off the richer colours. Also, the addition of optical image stabilization in iPhone 7 meant video tests were “remarkable”.

The site concluded the following on the iPhone 7’s camera:

Apple’s iPhone 7 improves on the image quality of its previous devices, with advances in dynamic range, detail preservation, and significantly reduced artifacts, as well as very good stabilization.

It performs particularly well in bright light conditions, making it a great smartphone camera for outdoor enthusiasts shooting landscapes, street scenes, architecture, or portraits.

A more efficient sensor should also mean that the new phone’s camera is more battery friendly, and a more powerful image processing chip can produce image quality improvements beyond those provided by the new sensor and re-designed lens.
