The location, coupled with Walbeck’s video composition and the iPhone XS Max video camera, resulted in a stunning clip, showing off what’s capable from Apple’s latest smartphone.

According to Walbeck, he used a Freefly Gimbal with the iPhone XS Max and the FiLMiC Pro iOS app to shoot his footage in 4K in Hawaii. Check it out below:

The iPhone XS Max has much improved dynamic range, plus its in-camera stabilization has been improved when in use with a gimbal compared to the iPhone X, says Walbeck, who listed off what he loved about the smartphone’s video capabilities.

As for some negatives when it comes to using an iPhone XS Max for video, Walbeck says battery life and overheating are issues when filming 4K, while he also wishes for manual control over aperture. The sensor size on smartphones are still too small for his liking, he says, which results in compressed images.

Overall, Walbeck says he is “super impressed” with the iPhone XS Max and will later share similar video tests to compare using Google’s latest Pixel 3 smartphone.
