Lonely Planet Introduces New Photo-Sharing Travel App ‘Trips’

If you’ve ever planned a vacation abroad, you’ve probably spent some time with Lonely Planet. The travel guide publisher today announced the launch of Trips by Lonely Planet, a self-publishing content platform offering the modern traveler an enjoyable, easy way to discover and share their experiences.

The new app allows users to upload photos and videos directly from their phone’s photo library and craft stories illustrating their trips, reads a new story from TechCrunch. The application’s design allows users to “like” others people’s trips, follow other users, an save stories as favorites to one’s profile.

Additionally, Trips allows users to discover new trips through filters such as location or theme. Wildlife and nature, road trips, and adventure travel are just a few examples of tags that can be used in finding new trips. As Lonely Planet is at heart a travel guide, the company’s team of expert writers and editors will frequently curate top recommendations to inspire users for their next trip.

“At Lonely Planet, we are proud of our long history of offering the world’s best travel content in a variety of ways,” said CEO Daniel Houghton. “We understand what the modern traveler wants and have delivered an interactive digital platform that offers an effortless, mobile-first way to document, share and discover remarkable experiences. Trips is simply the next step in growing Lonely Planet as we continue to pioneer the future of travel.”

As one of Lonely Planet’s first forays into user-generated content, Houghton is expecting the company’s community to make the app a success. “We’ve never really had anything like this before, short of Thorn Tree, which has been around for 21 years,” Houghton said, referring to Lonely Planet’s long-established travel forum. “It’s just a forum, but it’s a successful one.”
