Microsoft has Quietly Discontinued all Xbox One Consoles

Microsoft has reportedly shifted its focus from manufacturing both Xbox One consoles and its new Xbox Series X/S. As a result, it’s said that the company has quietly stopped manufacturing the Xbox One S and Xbox One X by the end of 2020.

As reported by The Verge, Microsoft has confirmed that the company began halting manufacturing of its previous line of consoles as it began revving up for a new console generation. As the company looked towards pushing focus on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, retailers were left to sell out of their remaining stock of the One X and One S respectfully.

Senior director of Xbox console product marketing Cindy Walker told The Verge, “To focus on production of Xbox Series X / S, we stopped production for all Xbox One consoles by the end of 2020.”

News of this comes shortly after Xbox head Phil Spencer sat down with The New York Times and discussed the success and sales of the Xbox Series X/S. According to Spencer, sales of the new consoles are outpacing previous Xbox consoles during the same post-launch period.

“At this point, we’ve sold more of this generation of Xboxes, which is Xbox Series X and S, than we had any previous version of Xboxes,” Spencer said.

In contrast, Bloomberg reported that in order for Sony to combat the shortages of PlayStation 5 consoles, the company will be manufacturing one million PlayStation 4 consoles in 2022. As both Microsoft and Sony struggle to meet the demand for the new consoles, Sony is taking a different approach. Initial plans were to end the production of the PlayStation 4 in 2021.

Over the course of the pandemic, players have been struggling to reliably find Xbox Series X and PlayStation consoles on store shelves and digital marketplaces. However, it does appear as though the Xbox Series S is more obtainable, even in Canada.
