Netflix Canada Inks Disney Deal, Films to Stream 8 Months After Theatrical Release

Netflix Canada is set to stream more Disney films, as both companies have announced a multi-year licensing deal has been signed. Netflix will now be the exclusive Canadian subscription TV service for first-run Disney live-actions and animated films.

Netflix Canada will start streaming new titles from Disney Live Action, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, Disneynature and DreamWorks Studios in 2015. Titles will become available 8 months after they leave theatres, which is typically faster than normal TV cable.

“We are delighted to be the new pay TV home in Canada for the world’s highest-quality, most imaginative and entertaining films,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer for Netflix. “Canadians of all ages will have an incredible range of great stories and characters to look forward to.”

Dan Cohen, executive vice president, said in a statement “We are absolutely thrilled that Canadian Netflix subscribers will be able to experience Disney’s premium films in the pay TV window.”

Back in December 2012, both companies announced a Canadian licensing deal which brought numerous Disney films to the streaming service. At the time, the latter announcement noted 2016 would be the year theatrical release titles would become available but that looks to have changed to 2015 instead.

iOS users are able to watch Netflix from any device including their Apple TV, making the streaming service accessible from pretty much everywhere.
