Cult of Mac reports that Apple will be brining wireless syncing to iPods this year and the key to making it happen is a new carbon fiber design. Since it has been found out that Apple hired a carbon fiber expert, Cult of Mac reports that it can now reveal that Apple “has been testing WiFi syncing in iPod devices for the past two years.”
According to their source, getting large music and movie libraries to wirelessly sync over WiFi has been troublesome, with issues related to reliability, signal strength, case design, and battery life. But Apple CEO Steve Jobs is determined to get the function working.
“They’ve tried multiple different body designs and materials to get it to work well but it’s been slow going,†says our source. “They have however found many improvements using a carbon fiber design.â€
The report further cites that Apple has prototyped the iPod classic and the iPod Nano (camera version) and that the carbon fiber casings have improved some WiFi issues. Based on this information, it seems that iPods could eventually be getting WiFi radios installed.
While the source provided no information about WiFi syncing with the iPhone, it would not be difficult to implement the functionality into the iPhone considering the device already has a WiFi radio. WiFi syncing has been a much requested feature for the iPhone and these moves by Apple could be the first step to making this happen.
