According to a new report from CBC News, the province of Quebec has announced that they will be enforcing new laws, starting on Saturday, that ban drivers and cyclists from using headphones while on the road.
Drivers will also be charged with heftier fines if they are caught using an electronic device while driving. Fines will now range from $300 to $600 with as many as five demerit points. Any additional offence within a two year period will now lead to an immediate licence suspension.
If cyclists are caught using an electronic device, or wearing headphones, they will be charged anywhere between $80 and $100. Those who use mobility scooters will face fines between $30 and $60 for the same offences.
Drivers will be allowed to wear one earbud, however, cyclists and mobility scooter users will be prohibited from wearing them at all. This is a ban that most people interviewed by the CBC, were able to support.
The CAA is recommending that all drivers and cyclists get setup before hitting the road, so that the chance of you having the use a device during your drive is reduced.
