Samsung Display Reportedly Developing Rollable Screens for 2021

Samsung Display plans to roll out its first rollable and sliding displays soon.

A new report from The Elec explains that Samsung Display senior vice-president Kwon-Young Choi confirmed during an earnings call that it will “fortify our presence in the display market through innovative form factors such as rollable and sliding displays.”

Although Samsung hasn’t confirmed any plans of launching a rollable phone, reports out of South Korea had claimed last year that the tech giant is aiming to release its first phone with a rollable screen in 2022.

It’s worth noting that the Korean smartphone maker has also filed patents in the past related to phones with sliding displays, something that Oppo has shown before as well. In particular, a patent filed in 2019 shows how the screen in a Samsung device can slide down and back, revealing the selfie camera, along with other sensors at the top.

It is also not yet confirmed if Samsung will be launching its own smartphones with rollable or sliding screens, or will it be making it for other manufacturers. For what it’s worth, Samsung is also one of the major screen suppliers for Apple’s latest iPhones.
