The University of Regina and SaskTel have partnered with Huawei to be the first in Canada to develop a new wireless technology.

The wireless technology is called HetNet (Heterogeneous Networks), which consist of a variety technologies and operates at a variety of frequencies to deliver a high quality user experience. The technology was first installed in the Kinesiology building and Riddell Centre at the University of Regina.

To achieve this high quality, SaskTel used world-class Long-Term Evolution (LTE) products from Huawei, known as Microcell and Lampsite. Both products allow very high signal strength penetration indoors, which allows LTE speeds of up to 150 Mbps.

Huawei’s products have already been deployed in several locations around the world, however this is the first successful commercial deployment in Canada. SaskTel President and CEO said:

“This technology is the first of its kind in Canada and is being deployed to meet increasing demand for robust and reliable wireless service at the University of Regina. By working with the University of Regina to implement the HetNet technology we are able to demonstrate both our organizations’ commitment to being future focused.”

The project engaged graduate students in the University’s Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and several SaskTel wireless technology experts. Working with SaskTel, Huawei and the University of Regina were able to oversee the entire process, from the design and implementation to the ongoing optimization and support stage.

Students were given the valuable opportunity to work with cutting-edge network infrastructure. University of Regina President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Vianne Timmons said:

“The University is committed to working with community partners to provide our students with experiential learning opportunities, and this work is a wonderful example of how that commitment can benefit everyone involved.

Partnering with industry experts has provided a tremendous learning opportunity for our engineering students, benefited our entire campus by enhancing our wireless technology infrastructure, and provided SaskTel with the opportunity to work with the next generation of technological innovators in our province.”

In a statement, President of Huawei Canada Sean Yang said:

“SaskTel continues to demonstrate global leadership in deploying the latest and greatest wireless technologies. Bringing next generation wireless solutions to the students and faculty at the University of Regina highlights SaskTel’s dedication to developing provincial infrastructure, while ensuring students are able to learn using the technology of tomorrow. We are proud to be a part of such a great initiative.”

The initiative with SaskTel and the University of Regina is only one example of how various companies and institutions come together to raise the bar for wireless networks.
