Small Village on Haida Gwaii Steps into 2018 and Gets Cellular Service

After years of fighting, a small village of 280 people on Haida Gwaii finally gets cellular service. Local politicians of Port Clements, B.C. announced that the village will finally be getting cellular service thanks to Telus. In a statement, Mayor Urs Thomas said:

“That’s a huge deal. That’s a great moment.”

Local leaders have been lobbying for this to happen for many years. Larger communities on Haida Gwaii have had cellular service for almost 10 years now.

Thomas believes that not having cellular service in the community was a business decision. However, this has cost the village several hundreds of residents over the past few years. The addition of cellular service will bring a lot of benefit to local business, attracting new residents and tourists.
