Sonos has announced today its smart speakers enabled with Amazon’s Alexa assistant have finally gained support for French Canadian, available via a software update.

Alexa-enabled speakers from the company include its Sonos One and Sonos Beam TV sound bar, which now will allow French Canadians to control their music, television and more hands-free.

“They say that the best things in life are free and we’re excited to share that you can now enjoy Alexa in French Canadian on Sonos, including the One and the Beam, with a free software update,” according to Dave Wood, Country Director, Sonos Canada, in an email to iPhone in Canada.

The Sonos One (Gen 1) is currently on sale for $224.99 CAD, while the recently updated Sonos One (Gen 2) with faster hardware and BLE retails for $249.99 CAD.

The company’s Sonos Beam soundbar can control compatible televisions using Alexa, meaning instant hands-free controls with your voice. The Sonos Beam retails for $499 CAD.

Sonos One and Sonos Beam currently support Apple’s AirPlay 2 protocol, while Google Assistant support is slated to debut later in 2019.

“Sonos believes in the freedom of choice – whether it’s the streaming service you listen to, or the voice assistant you invite into your home – and with this latest language addition from our partners at Amazon, we’re able to offer even more choice to Canadians,” added Wood.

Sonos One customers gained access to Amazon’s Alexa in February 2018, four months after the speaker launched in Canada. This addition of French Canadian Alexa support finally arrives just over one year later.
