Sony Celebrates First Anniversary of PlayStation 5, Reveals Top 10 Most Played Games on the Console

Today marks the first anniversary of the PlayStation 5. On November 12, 2020, players were able to finally get their hands on Sony’s new console in North America and other select markets. The company is now celebrating a successful first year.

Over the first year on the market, Sony has enriched the video game industry with new defining gameplay experiences, including Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Returnal, and Deathloop. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan reminisces in a PlayStation Blog post, saying: ” I am deeply honoured and humbled to celebrate this amazing first year with all of you.”

Sony and its many partners have helped launch over 360 new titles on the PlayStation 5 throughout the year. Ryan also confirms that more than 25 games are currently in development at PlayStation Studios. This includes highly anticipated titles like God of War Ragnarok, Gran Turismo 7, and Horizon Forbidden West.

Ryan also breaks down the top ten most played games on the PlayStation 5 throughout the year. Overall, it’s a pretty safe list to begin but how the second half shakes out is very interesting.

  • Fortnite
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • FIFA 21
  • NBA 2K21
  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
  • Destiny 2
  • MLB The Show 21
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Demon’s Souls
  • NBA 2K22

It’s also been said that collectively, a total of over 4.6 billion hours of gameplay has been seen on PlayStation 5 so far. The console has also been used to broadcast over 26 million hours of content throughout the year.

Finally, Ryan acknowledges the scarcity the PlayStation 5 currently grapples with. Recently, the company had to cut production targets due to global chip shortages. “Rest assured that we are laser-focused on doing everything in our power to ship as many units as possible,” Ryan says. “Again, we appreciate your patience as we navigate through these unprecedented global challenges.”
