Spotify on Desktop Can Now Initiate Stream to Chromecast Devices

The Spotify app on Mac and Windows can now stream music to Chromecast devices. This has been a long sought after feature as previously the app on desktop could only control pre-existing Chromecast streams.

According to a report from 9to5Google, Spotify music streams can now be started via the Mac and Windows app versus initiating them on iOS or Android devices. Starting the Chromecast stream on a desktop can be done through Spotify Connect. Previously, Spotify Connect would be the hub for controlling the stream after initiating it on a separate device.

Spotify Rock Star MattSuda wrote: “Good news! You can now find Chromecast in the connect “devices available” menu in the Spotify desktop app and browser web player. Now you can cast your music to Chromecast from the desktop app without having to use the iOS or Android app. Make sure your Spotify desktop app is up to date”

By clicking “Devices Available” on the bottom right of the Spotify Connect interface, users can now select their Chromecast device. Compatible devices include Google Cast and any Spotify Connect-enabled speakers.

This feature is available through the 1.1.38 update on the desktop app. It has long been requested by Spotify users, especially since the advent of Chromecast audio devices. Spotify forums were flooded in 2015 asking for this feature to be implemented.
