Square’s Card Reader is Now Available at Shoppers Drug Mart

Square Canada has announced today its credit card readers can now be found at 440 Shoppers Drug Mart locations nationwide. The Square Reader is free after you apply the $10 rebate and allows anyone to accept credit card payments on their mobile device, such an iPhone or iPad.

According to Square’s data, 69% of Canadian consumers expect to use a credit card when they are out shopping. With the Square Reader, merchants are charged a flat 2.75% transaction fee per swipe. An example of a happy Square merchant is the Tawse Winery in Vineland, Ontario. Laurie McKenzie, Hospitality Manager at Tawse Winery says the ability to accept payments away from the register:

“In our gift shop each of our employees have a tablet and a Square credit card reader, so they’re able to focus on our guests,” said McKenzie. “Our customers don’t like waiting in lines, and with Square we’re able to give them the one-on-one support they’re seeking.”

In February, Square announced support for Discover and Diners Club credit cards.

Earlier this month, rumours swirled Square was in talks with Google, Apple and PayPal for a possible sale, which they denied.
