Stranger Things Season 4 Has Become the Second Netflix Series to Surpass 1 Billion Hours Viewed

Netflix’s Stranger Things Season 4 has blown up and been the talk of the town across the internet. After debuting the final two episodes as part of the Volume 2 release, the season became the second Netflix series ever to surpass one billion hours viewed.

Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 1 was first released on May 27th, 2022. The first seven episodes of the season made up the initial volume. The final two episodes were released on July 1st, 2022. Since the initial release, Netflix viewers have spent 1.5 billion hours watching. If that’s not impressive enough, 301 million hours were totalled from the past weekend alone.

Hitting this milestone means that Stranger Things Season 4 is the second most-watched Netflix series. Having totalled 1.5 billion hours of viewership places it behind 2021’s smash-hit Squid Game. In October 2021, it was confirmed that Squid Game became the most viewed series on Netflix with 1.65 billion hours viewed. However, that’s not to take away from the successes of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers who serve as creators, and the cast and crew.

Currently, Stranger Things sits in the Top 10 across 93 countries around the world. On top of that, previous seasons of the series are also seeing a boost in viewership. All four seasons of Stranger Things were in Netflix’s top six most-watched shows this past weekend.

What’s even more impressive is the show’s ability to retain an audience while having an unorthodox run time for each episode. On average, episodes of Stranger Things Season 4 are around 75 minutes in length. However, the season finale is over two hours, and is essentially a movie. Capturing an audience and keeping them invested over more than an hour each episode is no easy feat.

Suffice to say though, Stranger Things Season 4 is a smash hit for Netflix. Following news that the streaming service faced subscriber loss earlier this year, this should be a huge boon for the company.
