Telegram Messenger Sees Increase in New Users Following WhatsApp Ban in Brazil

According to a new report, Telegram Messenger has seen an increase in new Brazilian users following the announcement of a WhatsApp ban in Brazil.

The suspension was first ordered on February 11 after WhatsApp apparently declined to assist law enforcement. WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption doesn’t allow the company to hand over conversation transcripts even if they are legally compelled to. Only the users that are at either end of the conversation have access to read the text.

Telegram Messenger gained a total of 4.5 million users over the past two days. The company says that users will send about 700 million messages throughout the course of one day.

“This growth is entirely your achievement, since we haven’t spent a single cent on advertising. Thank you — and keep it up! We’ve measured user activity since June last year to show you a few encouraging graphs.

Here‘s what you’ve done: since June 2014 Telegram messages sent daily in the USA increased 8 times, the UK grew 5 times, Italy increased sixfold. Similar graphs can be drawn for more than 30 countries, from India to Turkey, from Malaysia to Chile.”

Here is a graph that shows the increase in message traffic in Brazil over the past several months:
