Topple – iPhone app review

Happy New Year everyone! Hope everyone had a great time bringing in 2009, and isn’t too hungover!  Today we’ll be taking it easy and reviewing one of the top apps in the App Store right now, Topple from ngmoco Inc.

Topple is like the illegitimate lovechild of Tetris and Jenga.  Using multi-touch controls, one finger to move up and down, and another finger to rotate, the aim of the game is to stack oddly shaped pieces as high as you can, without them toppling over.  The game takes advantage of the built-in accelerometer allowing you to keep your pieces balanced by tilting the screen from side to side. Another great feature of the game is all the pieces have faces, and depending on where and how you place them, you can watch their facial expressions for clues as to when or if they are going to topple!

This game can get very addicting, very fast.  It took me a while, but I finally made it to level 9.  I came close to getting to level 9 a few times, but just couldn’t get there…until now!  The first few levels are relatively easy because the base that you’re building upon is flat, but as you move up in the levels, they become jagged and rounded, making balancing even harder.  Not only that, but shapes of the pieces become more difficult as well, like pie shaped pieces and eggs!

For a limited time, this app is available for download for free.  Even at it’s regular price of $0.99 I would recommend this game, but for free this is a definite must have!!  Give it a try, and when you’re frustrated because you can’t get past a level, come here and leave a comment!  Happy New Year everyone!
