Tweetbot For Mac Alpha App Removed Due To New Twitter Rules

With Twitter’s latest announcement, they’ve added a limit to the amount of users a third-party application can support. The limit allows up to 100,000 user tokens, anything beyond will have to be negotiated with Twitter.

Due to the changes, Tapbots has removed the download link to its Tweetbot for Mac Alpha application and released the following update to their blog:

As some of you may have already noticed the download link for the Tweetbot for Mac alpha no longer works. Twitter’s latest API Changes means now we have a large but finite limit on the number of user tokens we can get for Tweetbot for Mac. We’ve been working with Twitter over the last few days to try to work around this limit for the duration of the beta but have been unable to come up with solution that was acceptable to them. Because of this we’ve decided its best for us to pull the alpha.

The full-list of Twitter third-party-access rules can be found on the Tapbots blog. They note “with the above rules being in place its easy to see why continuing the public alpha/beta would be problematic.”

This can especially be a problem for Tapbots because if a user downloads Tweetbot and logs in, one token vanishes. If that user then decides to leave Tweetbot for whatever reason, the third party developers will never regain that token unless the user personally revokes it from Twitter.

Having launched in beta in early July, the application will no longer be out for beta testing. The company does note that Tweetbot will hit the Mac with a price tag in the near future though.
