Twitter Celebrating the 2021 World Juniors with New Emojis and In-Arena Tweets

Twitter is celebrating the start of the 2021 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships by incorporating new emojis on the social media platform. Fan tweets sent during the games will be shown on various screens within the Rogers Place arena as well.

The 2021 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships will begin this Friday, December 25th. To get fans ready, Twitter has activated new emojis to use on social media. When tweeting the hashtag #WorldJuniors or #MondialJunior, a special maple leaf emoji will appear. This is the same maple leaf logo found in the 2021 tournament logo.

Additionally, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Roger Place arena in Edmonton will be empty during each game. Without an audience, Hockey Canada has partnered with Twitter to feature fan tweets throughout each game. Tweets incorporating the #WorldJuniors or #MondialJunior hashtags have a chance to be featured on the arena’s screens. Messages showing positivity for the sport and teams are encouraged to stand in for the crowd’s usual enthusiasm.

Finally, Twitter Canada provided some insightful data on the World Juniors. According to their data, 56% of all-time tweets featuring the #WorldJuniors hashtag have been from Canada. Following the number one spot, the USA and Finland ranked 2nd and 3rd with the most mentions.

Toronto ranked as the number one city with the most #WorldJuniors mentions of all-time. Vancouver, Calgary, New York, Ottawa, and Edmonton followed. The 2017 World Juniors saw the highest volume of tweets in history. During that championship, the US won over Canada.
