Walmart to Support Interac Debit In-App Payments via Apple Pay and More

Interac has announced it has partnered with Walmart Canada to bring new Interac payments for in-app and in-browser payments, on digital wallets such as Apple Pay or Google Pay, coming in spring of 2021.

The news comes on the heels of Walmart Canada stores launching tap payments for Interac Flash at point-of-sale terminals, allowing customers to pay using Apple Pay as well.

“Interac is proud to work with Walmart Canada, one of the country’s leading retailers, to help deliver seamless online payment experiences. The collaboration will give Walmart customers more debit payment options, allowing them to transact using their own money within the channel of their choice,” said William Keliehor, Chief Commercial Officer at Interac, in an emailed statement to iPhone in Canada.

“Given Walmart’s size, scope, and scale in the domestic retail market, this working relationship signals increased momentum for the continued expansion of Interac Debit for In-App and In-Browser Payments in Canada,” added Keliehor.

According to Interac, since March 2020, Interac Debit for in-app and in-browser payments have jumped on average 22% month-over-month, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This is part of our ongoing effort to make shopping at Walmart easy, safe and seamless, especially during these challenging times.”

Interac Debit for in-app and in-browser payments launched last fall and allows customers to check out using digital wallets, bypassing the traditional process of entering in payment and shipping address information, resulting in a faster and more convenient check out experience.
