WhatsApp Is Now The Biggest Messaging App On iPhones

With apps like Facebook Messenger and iMessage apparently dominating the iOS messaging apps market, WhatsApp is actually the biggest messaging app on iPhones with a dominant marketshare in most countries, according to Onavo Team‘s report.

The team assessed the big messaging apps in countries around the world to determine which messaging apps are used by the highest percent of each country’s iPhone users. The chart above shows monthly active usage, which Onavo can see because it compresses and analyzes data flowing in and out of every app if a user has Onavo products on their phones.

Our report uncovered that there are certain apps that dominate in specific countries. KakaoTalk, for example is used by 88% of South Korean iPhone users; Line is used by 44% of Japanese iPhone users. Other apps, such as Pinger, are incredibly popular on iPod touch devices, but are still breaking into the iPhone market.

The top two messaging apps across the board however, are Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp. Both of these apps have incredible reach in all iPhone markets, but it is WhatsApp that is clearly the biggest messaging app on iPhones.
