Women Are After the Silver iPhone 5s, Men Prefer the White iPhone 5c

One of the subjects that Apple is usually silent about when it announces iPhone sales numbers is which models are the most popular. The question is more timely than ever, since last month Apple launched two iPhones, the 5s and the colourful 5c. We know that first-weekend sales have topped 9 million handsets, but which ones do consumers prefer in terms of colour? Consumer Intelligence Research Partners has decided to find some answers.

In an email sent to iPhone in Canada, CIRP detailed the iPhone 5s and 5c buying behaviours in the US, based on data collected since the handsets reached the stores. The iPhone 5s is available in three colours: gold, space grey, and silver. On the other hand, the iPhone 5c is available in five colours: blue, white, green, pink, and yellow.

iPhone 5s:5c colours

According to CIRP’s findings, the iPhone 5S, Space Gray accounts for 43% of all iPhone 5S sales, while the iPhone 5c blue and white models are the most popular choices, with 27% and 25%, respectively, while yellow accounted for 7% of overall sales.

It is worth noting here that the unlocked 16GB yellow iPhone 5c was the first to sell out when Apple made online preordering available.

iPhone 5s colours by gender

When looking at the colour choices by gender, men preferred the space grey version of the iPhone 5s, while woman preferred the silver model. Gold — the model that sold out in less than 10 minutes of online availability — accounted for 27% of all sales, according to the CIRP study.

iPhone 5c colour by gender

“iPhone 5S and 5C colors seem to confirm some traditional gender biases. In the iPhone 5C, men prefer the neutral white, and the Space Gray in the iPhone 5S. In contrast, women prefer lighter silver 5S and the brighter iPhone 5C colors. Interestingly, no one, including the women in the survey, appears to want the Yellow iPhone 5C very much,” said CIRP Partner and Co-Founder Mike Levin.

When it comes to the iPhone 5c, men favoured the white and blue models (32% for each colour), and women went after the pink model (34%).
